Abdulkader Tayob

Abdulkader Tayob serves as Professor of Islamic Studies at the Department of Religious Studies, University of Cape Town. He earned his doctoral degree in 1989 from Temple University in the United States and has established himself as a prominent scholar in Islamic studies with particular expertise in the African context.

His research focuses on:

• Modern Islam and its contemporary manifestations
• Islam in the African continent, particularly South Africa
• The intersection of religion, Islamic tradition, and ethical frameworks
• Historical development of Islamic education

Professor Tayob's scholarly contributions include several significant books such as 'Education' (2011), 'Modern Islam' (2009), and a collaborative translation of an early historical text (2011), which build upon his earlier foundational work on Islam in South Africa. Currently, he is investigating the complex interface between religion, Islam, and ethics in contemporary contexts.

He serves as Principal Investigator for the Subproject on Sexual and Gender Based Violence in Cape Town, contributing to important research on religious responses to social issues in urban African settings.
