ANTONIO FERNANDEZ RAMOS
Professor · Theoretical and Computational Chemistry
University of Santiago de CompostelaAbout
Antonio Fernández-Ramos is a Full Professor at the Department of Physical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). He leads the Fernández-Ramos research group, part of the Research Center in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials (CIQUS). His roles include principal investigator in theoretical and computational chemistry, specializing in chemical reaction dynamics and software development for simulating reactions. He holds a PhD from USC (1998) and has held postdoctoral fellowships at the National Research Council of Canada (NRCC) and the Universidade de Coimbra. He became a Full Professor at USC in 2015.
Research interests focus on simulating chemical reactions using advanced computational methods, including combustion chemistry, ultra-low temperature reactions, and quantum tunneling effects. Key contributions include developing software tools like Pilgrim, Torsiflex, and Q2DTor under the Cathedral Package, which are open-source and MIT-licensed. These tools address challenges in reaction kinetics, conformational flexibility, and torsional anharmonicity.
His work applies to organometallic catalysis, biofuel combustion, interstellar chemistry, and spectroscopy. Recent studies include the decomposition of 1-propanol radicals, hydrogen transfer in urea derivatives, and OH radical reactions at varying temperatures. He has published over 80 articles and two review papers, with collaborations at institutions like the University of Minnesota.
Scientific awards include the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry Prize for Young Researchers (2003). His research integrates kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, variational transition state theory, and semiclassical methods to advance reaction dynamics understanding.
