About
ANA MARIA OTERO CASAL is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology at the Faculty of Biology, University of Santiago de Compostela. She is affiliated with the Institute for Aquatic Research for Global Health (iARCUS) and the Strategic Grouping in Sustainable Management and Production of Bioresources (BioReDes), and leads the DITAPREIN research group focused on biotechnology for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases.
Her research interests lie at the intersection of microbiology and sustainable bioproduction, with a strong emphasis on marine and aquatic systems. Key areas include the biotechnological application of microorganisms, development of diagnostic and therapeutic tools for infectious diseases, and sustainable management of bioresources. Her work integrates microbial physiology, biochemical engineering, and environmental biotechnology.
Ana Maria Otero Casal completed her Doctorate at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1994 with a thesis on the modification of the biochemical composition of marine microalgae under cyclostat culture conditions, supervised by Dr. Jaime Fabregas Casal.
She is actively involved in collaborative research through her leadership in the DITAPREIN group and participation in iARCUS and BioReDes, contributing to interdisciplinary efforts in global health and sustainable biotechnology.
