About
A. Bruce Downie is a Professor at the University of Kentucky, affiliated with the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment and the Department of Horticulture. His research focuses on seed biology, particularly seed longevity, germination mechanisms, and the role of late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins in stress tolerance. He leads studies on how seeds transition from dormancy to germination and their molecular adaptations to environmental stresses.
- Research Themes:
- Seed maturation and desiccation tolerance
- LEA protein interactions and stress responses
- Genetic and physiological basis of seed longevity
His work integrates physiological and molecular approaches to understand seed function as a plant propagule. Collaborative projects include the LEAPin initiative (http://www.uky.edu/hort/LEAPin_overview) and public engagement through Seedsleuths (http://www.seedsleuths.com).
