Élide Valarini Oliver is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), and Director of the Center for Portuguese Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Music and Letters from the University of São Paulo (USP), with postdoctoral research at USP and Yale University. Her expertise spans Brazilian literature (Baroque to Contemporary), comparative literature, translation theory and practice, literary criticism, and cultural studies. She has taught at USP, PUC–São Paulo, and held visiting positions at Oxford University and USP.
Her research focuses on Brazilian cultural contexts, including studies on Machado de Assis, Lima Barreto, and Guimarães Rosa, alongside translations of works by T.S. Eliot, João Cabral de Melo Neto, and others. Awards include the Jabuti Prize (2007), twice the Itamaraty Prize (2006, 2008), and the National Library 'Paulo Rónai' Award (2022).
